Frequently Asked Questions

Help! Our organ is not working properly!

It happens, and is quite normal for organs to be a little on the temperamental side. Many of them were made a long time ago, and can play up from time to time due to their age or sometimes even the weather conditions. You can get in touch with us on 0403 541 296 and we will attempt to assist you over the phone if the problem is simple. If we can't help in that way, please talk to us about a special visit to attend to your organ so you can get playing again straight away.

How big is your team?

We are a core team of three, and frequently collaborate with our wider community instrument makers, pipe makers, and craftspeople throughout Victoria. As a traditional trade, we value the exchange of knowledge that comes with working with each other, and with our wider community of artisans.

What is the best way for us to care for our organ between tuning & maintenance visits?

There are three main ways to care for your instrument. The first way is to always ensure that the blower is turned off after the organ has been used. Blowers will last for many years, but if left running can overheat, requiring extensive repairs. The second way is to make sure you leave the swell shutters open after playing the organ as this will ensure that the organ stays in tune with itself between tuning visits. Much like an old car or any vintage machine, the third way to care for your organ is to ensure that the organ is played regularly to prevent moving parts from seizing up. Please also note any faults in the organ log book located in the console. This ensures we can address any ongoing issues for you, and creates an important historical record of your organ for future generations.

Did you go to organ building school?

In Australia, there is no dedicated course of study specifically for organ building, owing to the trade having become such a niche area. The trade apprenticeship in Australia has students following a course of study in a related trade, such as cabinet making or metal work, and then learning their organ building skills on-the-job. In Europe dedicated organ building schools are more common. The most common way for organ builders in the USA and Australia is to come to the trade is via another trade that has transferrable skills to organ building. Like our colleagues in the USA, our team come from a diverse background including cabinet making, visual art, welding and farming, music, and hospitality. We have worked closely and been trained on the job with some of Australia's most talented organ builders, and assisted our international colleagues on large projects also. We have over 30 years of organ building experience behind us, and continue with our professional development on a regular basis.
