Relocating St Patrick’s organ to the nave

A photo of small pipe organ standing on a polished wooden floor. Light streams across the golden pipes, and warm coloured timber casework. It looks cozy and inviting in an alcove in the church. Work carried out by Pipe Organs Victoria.

In the scenic Gariwerd (Grampians) region of Victoria, you’ll find the parish of Gariwerd, encompassing Ararat and Stawell. Home to a range of pipe organs, the 1979 Laurie Pipe Organ in original condition at St Patrick’s Catholic Church reminds us of the significance of these budget-friendly instruments from that era and their role in the musical heritage of many parishes.

In 2022, St. Patrick’s embarked on a some renovations. The interior received a fresh coat of paint, new wiring, and some cozy heating. Even the floor is had a makeover. However, when it came to the organ, which was situated in the sanctuary, it location posed a challenge to the renovations. Pipe Organs Victoria were called in to lend our expertise to relocate the organ from the sanctuary to the nave of the church.

The organ’s compact size enabled us to relocate it with minimal dismantling, and once the pipes and larger winding components were removed, it was a matter of carefully rolling the organ down the aisle! We took the opportunity to clean and repair the pipes, reinforce the rackboard, adjust some electronic components in the pedalboard and clean throughout the organ while the body of the organ was empty. Placed snugly at the back of the nave, the sound now fills the space beautifully, as if it had always belonged there.

Working on this project in such a stunning part of Victoria was an absolute joy, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Fr. Andrew and Jill for their warm hospitality throughout the process.
